Mufflers and performance effects?

the two things that a muffler will have an effect on really are volume and power. the big idea is how well the air will pass through the muffler and how well the vibrations are dampened by the material inside the muffler. i could stick the muffler directly on the exhaust manifold with pretty much the same effect as having it hanging off the rear bumper.
