Barking dog, inconsiderate neighbor - what to do?
Unfortunately, a lot of people today think that any behavior is fine until their neighbors complain. I know it used to be that we were considerate of neighbors 1st by asking them to tell us if our outdoor music was going to be offensive. I liked the old rule of keeping one's lifestyle limited to the boundaries of their property. (That included noise.) -- I have found that I need to approach these thoughtless neighbors. They often don't realize that they are a bother. I approach & ASK them if they would please turn down their music while I was sleeping. I'd inform them that I was a day sleeper. All of my neighbors were thoughtful enough to comply. The younger kids, I had to approach more than once. I explained that the volume setting they were using at the time was ALWAYS going to be too loud. It has since been a very peaceful neighborhood. I even had one neighbor that was moving away tell me that he warned the new tenants where my bedroom window was located & that I sleep during the day. They moved in & have been quiet neighbors. Asking POLITELY did yield me the results I needed. And I also followed through by greeting them when I was in the yard. Sometimes walking up to tell them how well I slept & what I was able to accomplish & from there, we'd both be talking about our days. We can't just limit our conversations to complaints.
