Can someone explain insider trading to me?

Like in simple terms. Let's say a guy named bob runs an oil company, and has lots of employees, and another guy named Jack is a stockbroker or floor trader. Can someone give me a situation where insider trading happens with Bob, his employees, or Jack? Why is it illegal? Thanks for the answers!
